Welcome to Cake Talk! Our goal is to share with you tips and tricks when it comes to cake decorating. Every cake project tests our skills and pushes our talent to a deeper level. All of us have many different cake experiences so enjoy this blog and please bring in your comments and contributions!
My name is Christie Apodaca and I am a cake decorating enthusiast. I started cake decorating when I was 12 at a time when star piping was all the rage! I successfully convinced my mother to sign up to a and adult cake decorating class so I could tag along. Pretty soon she was dropping me off in class and going back home! Needless to say I have enjoyed cake decorating ever since.
I was born in Lima, Peru and grew up in Davis, California. Since a very young age I was always in love with art and design, dreaming of someday being a fashion designer. Although I choose not to pursue art or design sewing and working with cakes has always been my creative outlets.
I pursued a degree in mechanical and aeronautical engineering graduating from UC Davis. Post graduation I worked for a number of corporations including Toyota, Accenture, and Johns Manville in various areas including process engineering, quality, and enterprise resource management solutions. Aside from the corporate world I have always been interested in entrepreneurship and business development. This led me to work with my family's poultry breeding farm specializing heavy layers and cage free eggs.
Eager for another change I decided to start a cake making business, Cake Couture, and enroll in graduate school in the evenings while I stayed home with my kids during the day. It was the hardest three years of my life to balance so much (at my peak I made 10 wedding cakes in one week!!) but somehow my family and I survived:).
Today I work as a technology consultant for Gartner. Although I love my new career, cake art work will always be a special part of my life. I work to share and maintain this love of cake art through this blog.
Welcome and enjoy!:)
